I also work closely with our healthcare research ecosystem, including the Care and Cure clinic, where clinical researchers are producing work on patient outcomes, treatment protocols, and epidemiological data. In this setting, the formatting problem takes on additional weight. A clinician-researcher who has just completed a meaningful retrospective study on 300 patient records should be spending their limited research time interpreting clinical significance, not manually constructing PubMed-style reference lists.

India has significant ambitions in research and innovation. The National Education Policy 2020 has set targets for research output, institutional rankings, and global knowledge contribution. But you cannot build a research culture on a foundation where your best minds are spending nearly half their productive time on tasks that add zero intellectual value. The formatting burden is a structural tax on Indian academic productivity, and it falls most heavily on those without resources to outsource or automate it.
There is also a psychological dimension that I think deserves more attention. Research is inherently difficult. There will be experiments that fail, hypotheses that need revision, datasets that refuse to cooperate. That difficulty is necessary and valuable — it is how knowledge advances. But when scholars begin to associate research with the additional exhaustion of formatting drudgery, the cumulative effect on motivation is real. I have seen talented people quietly reduce their submission frequency not because they lacked ideas, but because the overhead cost of each submission felt too high.
The solution is not to tell PhD scholars to manage their time better. I am tired of that conversation. The solution is to remove the problem entirely through automation. Bibliography formatting, citation style compliance, reference verification — these are rule-based mechanical tasks. They can and should be handled by intelligent systems, freeing researchers to do the one thing only humans can do: think, analyse, interpret, and create.
